Magnolia 4-H to hold annual Play Day, Barrel Race

The Magnolia 4-H club will host its sixth annual Play Day and Open 4 Division Barrel Race on April 2 at the Magnolia Community Horse Club Arena, located on Friendship Drive.

Guests riding in the Play Day will be divided into six age groups between ages 6 and 50. The event will include barrels, poles, stakes and a speed race. Buckles will be awarded to winners of the event.

The Play Day event will begin at 10 a.m. and there is an $8 entry fee. The barrel race will begin at 6 p.m. with a $35 entry fee and $5 office fee, of which 80 percent is paid back to winners. There will also be $1,000 added to the open barrel race for winning barrel racers. Winners will receive equal payouts.

The Lone Star Cowgirls Drill Team will perform at 5 p.m. The event will also include concessions and a silent auction. The auction is free to the public.

Two exhibition barrel races will take place for beginners at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The Magnolia Community Horse Club recently finished constructing a roof over the arena.

President Hurshel Haley said prior to the roof construction it was difficult to hold events due to weather conditions such as heat or rain. Now the club is able to hold events during nearly all weather, he explained.
