Cougars bring national ranking into soccer playoffs

The Tomball Cougar boys’ soccer team has reached a new pinnacle this season with an undefeated regular season record and a top 5 ranking in the entire nation.

The Cougars wrapped up their 2011 regular season with a 2-0 win over Westfield on March 22 that brought the team’s remarkable record to 21-0-3 and a 13-5A district championship. This is the second consecutive year the Cougars have won the 13-5A title.

The team’s success has not gone unnoticed, both statewide and nationally. The Texas Association of Soccer Coaches has consistently ranked the Cougars as the No. 1 team in the state throughout the season and espn.com has ranked the Cougars as the No. 3 team in the nation, behind only No. 1 Montverde Academy (Fla.) and No. 2 Southlake Carroll (Texas).

Next up for the Cougars is a first round playoff game scheduled for Tuesday, March 29 against Lufkin at Tomball High School at 5 p.m. The Lady Cougars’ playoff game follows at 7 p.m.

The Cougars have been dominant since the regular season began Jan. 13. Tomball went undefeated in the elite Klein Showcase Tournament, defeating Cy Lakes, San Antonio Clark and MacArthur. They were just as impressive in the Pasadena ISD Cup, beating La Porte, Cy Ridge and Elsik, while drawing to one of three ties on the season against Dobie.

The only other non-wins the Cougars took were a 2-2 district contest against Spring and a 1-1 tie against Klein in early March.

Among the leaders for the Cougars this year have been senior midfielder Logan Miller and junior midfielder Jonathan Sanchez.

Meanwhile, the boys and girls soccer teams at Tomball are not the only ones who are making postseason appearances in the area.

The Magnolia West Mustangs took on the Montgomery Bears last week in the bi-district round of the 4A Region 3 playoffs.

But the Mustangs made an early exit from the playoffs, losing to the Bears, 6-1.

The Magnolia Bulldogs played the Willis Wildkats March 25 at Tomball High School and the Lady Bulldogs faced the Huntsville Hornets in Montgomery. Both of those games were also first round playoff contests, with results being unavailable at press time.
