| Cougar soccer makes it through first two playoff rounds |
|
The nationally-ranked Tomball Cougar boys soccer team has made it unscathed through the first two rounds of the Region 2 state soccer tournament. The Cougars, who are ranked No. 2 in the state and No. 3 in the nation by espn.com, handled Del Valle, 4-0, March 31 in the area round of the tournament. That win came after a first round bi-district shutout of Lufkin. With the win, the Cougars move on to the regional quarterfinals, where they will take on either The Woodlands College Park or Bowie on either April 4 or 5. The playoff victory over Del Valle improves the Cougars’ 2011 record to a remarkable 23-0-3. Meanwhile, the Lady Cougar soccer team, after finishing third in 13-5A, drew The Woodlands in the first round of the playoffs and fell to the Highlanders, 5-0. In other area high school soccer playoff news, the Magnolia West Mustangs were eliminated from the Class 4A tournament with a 6-1 loss to Montgomery in the first round. Their cross-town rivals, the Magnolia Bulldogs, didn’t fare any better, dropping their first-round contest to Willis, 4-2. The Waller Bulldogs were successful in their opening round game with a 1-0 win over Huntsville. They took on Willis in the second round sectionals in the 4A bracket last weekend. Results of that game were unavailable at press time. The two girls’ 4A squads to qualify for the postseason, the Magnolia Lady Bulldogs and the Waller Lady Bulldogs, also both suffered first round knock outs. Magnolia lost to Huntsville, 1-0, while Waller fell to Montgomery, 3-1, in overtime.
