Lady Cougar softball locks up another district title

Another season, another masterful performance by the Tomball Lady Cougar softball team.

Benita Dunlavy’s squad was a win away last from capping off a perfect 13-0 season in 13-5 A play. Their final opponent was Westfield, a team that was 5-13 overall and which the Lady Cougars beat 15-0 in March. Results of the game against Westfield were unavailable at press time last week.

The Lady Cougars clinched the 13-5A title with a 12-8 win over Klein Oak Lady Panthers on April 19 at Tomball High School. In the win, both Renada Davis and Lexie Comeaux connected for home runs.

Tomball took the early lead, going up 2-0 in the second inning. After the Lady Panthers scored a run in the third, the Lady Cougars plated four to make the score 6-1, seemingly putting the game out of reach for Klein Oak.

But the Lady Panthers took the leady by scoring six in the fifth inning off Tomball pitcher Michelle Quinn. The Tomball offense bailed Quinn out in the bottom of the inning, plating three runs to take a 9-7 lead.

Tomball scored three more in the sixth to seal the win.

The victory locked up the district title and the district’s No. 1 seed in the Region 2 playoffs, which begin the week of May 3. The Lady Cougars will face the fourth place team from district 14-5A, most likely Humble Atascocita.

Tomball will be looking to make its sixth appearance at the state tournament in the program’s history. If history holds to form, the Lady Cougars will be playing in Austin for the second consecutive season.

In 1993, Tomball made its debut appearance at the state tournament. They followed that up with a return trip in 1994. Ten years later in 2004, the Lady Cougars returned to Austin. Then in 2005, Tomball qualified yet again for state. They advanced to state last year as well.

However, in six state appearances, Tomball has yet to come away with the title.

Meanwhile, just as Tomball is a perennial state contender, so are the Magnolia Lady Bulldogs. In the ultra-competitive 17-4A, the Lady Bulldogs have gone 10-3 and faced Brenham April 21 to decide second place in the district.

Results of that game were unavailable at press time last week.

The winner will finish 11-3 and secure the district’s No. 2 seed in the Class 4A Region 3 playoffs. If Magnolia finishes in second, they will take on the third place team from 18-4A, likely either Kingwood Park or New Caney.

A third place finish will likely pit Magnolia against 18-4A runner-up Willis in next month’s softball playoffs.
