Lady ’Saders track earns state title in record-breaking fashion

The Concordia Lutheran Lady ’Sader track and field team has won a state title and they did so in record-setting fashion.

At the TAPPS state championship, held at Baylor University in Waco the weekend of May 6, the girls’ track team at Concordia took first place over a 22-team field, earning 134 total points, 20 better than runners-up Midland Christian.

The state title came mostly thanks to the Lady ’Sader’s three relay teams, each of which took first in their respective events and with two setting new state records.

Concordia’s 4-by-400-meter relay team of Jessica Barton, Leslie Klein, Chris Lindquist and Katie Reilly set a new TAPPS state record with a finish of 4:03.75. They out-ran the next closest competitors by more than 5 seconds, the Midland Christian team who came in at 4:08.38.

The Lady ’Saders set another state record in a relay event in the 4-by-200 meter relay. The team of Beth Thompson, Irene Featherston, Reilly and Barton set a new high mark with a time of 1:42.45, again more than 5 seconds better than the second place finisher, Lutheran South.

The 4-by-100 meter relay team of Featherston, Kelsey Crawford, Thompson and Barton nearly set a third state record with a time of 48.96 seconds, just short of the 48.46 posted by Dallas Bishop in 1999. Concordia’s time, however, was still good enough for first place in the event.

Relay events were not the only ones in which Lady ’Saders took home individual event titles. Crawford earned a gold medal in the shot put with a throw of 37-02.75 meters. Crawford edged teammate Katelyn Holland, who finished second with a throw of 36-09.5 meters.

Several members of the Lady ’Sader team finished in the top three in their respective events.

Thompson earned a second place finish in the long jump, with a jump of 16 feet, 10.75 inches, just short of first place finisher Jennifer Johnson of Trinity All Saints, who jumped 17 feet.

Barton scored silver in the high jump with a leap of 5 meters, 4 inches short of Midland Christian’s Kayla Johnston’s title jump.

Holland also earned a second place finish, with her silver coming in discus throw. Holland’s toss of 113-11 meters was behind Midland Christian’s Hannah Thompson’s 117-6 throw.

Reilly earned a bronze in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.69 seconds. Klein took home a pair of bronze medals, one in the 400-meter dash (59.86 seconds) and another in the 800-meter run (2:26.76).
