| Lady Cougars’ softball playoff magic continues |
|
It wouldn’t be a Texas high school playoff season without the Tomball Lady Cougars running roughshod through their opponents on their way to a state title run. Even though that title has remained elusive, the Lady Cougars are once again proving they are one of the best teams in the state. Last weekend Tomball took on the Bryan Lady Vikings in the Region 2 semi-finals. The Lady Vikings have been a surprise team in the region after finishing in just fourth place in 12-5A. Results of the best-of-three series were unavailable at press time last week. The Friday-Saturday series was to take place at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. If the Lady Cougars were able to stay hot and win the series, it could set up a potential blockbuster matchup in the Region 2 finals with a trip to the state tournament in Austin on the line. The Woodlands Lady Highlanders, the No. 1-ranked team in the area, state and entire nation, took on Belton in the other semi-final series. A May 27-28 series pitting The Woodlands against Tomball would feature two of the top teams in the state, and perhaps a better matchup than the state tournament could feature the following week. Tomball has been an offensive juggernaut in the playoffs. In six playoff games so far this postseason, the Lady Cougars have scored 12 or more runs three times. They scored nine runs in their lone defeat in the playoffs, a 15-9 loss to Austin SFA in the third round. The series against Austin was the second time in as many rounds that the Lady Cougars escaped elimination. In the second round, Tomball trailed Austin Bowie early, but rallied to win 6-5 in a winner-take-all one-game series. In the Regional Quarterfinals, Austin won the series’ first game on Friday, May 13. But the Lady Cougars swept the two remaining games on their way to the series victory. Opposing offenses have struggled to solve Lady Cougar ace Michelle Quinn, who has amassed a 14-3 record and a 2.66 ERA so far this year. She has struck out an astounding 115 batters in 58 innings, or an average of two batters per inning. Kaitlyn Doerre and Renada Davis have been among the offensive leaders for the Lady Cougars this season. Doerre is hitting .514 with 21 extra-base hits, including seven home runs. Davis is also hitting at a high clip, with a .487 average and 23 extra-base hits.
