Local squads well represented on baseball All-District teams

Now that the 2011 high school baseball season has concluded, postseason accolades are being handed out to the standouts of the past season.

All-District teams were recently announced for both 13-5A and 17-4A, with several local players earning spots on their respective squads.

After what could be considered a disappointing season in Tomball Cougar terms, with the team finishing barely above .500 and narrowly making the playoffs as the district’s fourth place team, four players were named to the 13-5A team, and just one to the First Team.

First baseman Spencer Rahm was the lone First Team selectee, while third baseman Jordan Henry, outfielder Matt Mundowsky and designated hitter Chase Daniels all were named to the Second Team.

The Cougars finished the season 15-14 overall and were swept by The Woodlands Highlanders in the first round of the playoffs.

The Magnolia Bulldogs, however, fared decidedly better in 2011 and that was reflected in their All-District selections. The Bulldogs went 24-16 and were one win away against Brenham in the regional finals from advancing to the state playoffs.

Their success was rewarded with seven players being named to the 17-4A All-District squad.

Jared Green was named First Team pitcher after posting a 7-4 overall record and a 3.77 ERA.

Infielder Colin Tornberg was one of the top hitters in the district, which earned him First Team honors. Tornberg hit .399 in 143 at bats with a team-high 57 hits and 21 RBI.

Outfielder Travis Lee also earned First Team honors, hitting .306 this season with 38 hits and 23 RBI.

Duncan Wendel was named the First Team’s utility player. Wendel hit a team-high .415 with 56 hits and 25 RBI.

Earning Second Team nods for Magnolia were outfielder Desmond Richards, designated hitter Garrett Luna and utility player Bredy Reid.

A 14-13-1 season and a playoff berth for the Magnolia West Mustangs resulted in the program having two players being named All-District performers, both First Team selections.

Pitcher Scott Walton posted a 5-2 record with a 2.06 ERA as the Mustangs’ No. 1 pitcher this season, while infielder Casey Martinez earned a First Team nod by hitting .345 with 20 hits and 17 RBI.
