| Tomball volleyball squads start season in winning ways |
|
Tomball Memorial Coach Morgan Rogers knew expectation weren’t very high for the new Tomball Memorial squad, especially considering the team consists only of freshmen and sophomores. “Yes but we want to compete every time,” Rogers said. “We are getting better everyday.” The prospect of getting better everyday must scare some opponents, considering the Wildcats have lost exactly zero times on the young season. Tomball Memorial started off the season by defeating Milby on Aug. 9 and a few days later beat the Conroe JV. The Wildcats have since followed it up by defeating Madison as well. The early start has many players eyeing a huge goal. “We have a lot going for us and I think we can go to state,” Amanda Coursey, a sophomore outside hitter said. “If we work hard we can surprise a lot of people.” Rogers says that while she just wants her team to compete she sees a fire in their eyes. “Being the underdog makes them fight harder,” she said. “They have a higher expectation.” While the Wildcats have some tough competition in District 24-3A with defending state semifinalist Columbus, the early wins seem to have upped their confidence level. “I think we can win districts,” Keleigh Carver, sophomore outside hitter said. “It’s really cool to be a part of the first team here. I’m excited.” Sophomore defensive specialist Kelsey Lambert, just wants to see improvement every game. “We just need to play our hardest game, especially since we’re mainly going against juniors and seniors,” she said. “Hopefully we can work hard and make it to the state tournament.” Tomball High Cheri Wallace looks at her squad and sees a chance at state this year. One year removed from a playoff birth and a second place finish in District 13-5A, the Lady Cougars return seven senior leaders. “I always expect a lot,” said Wallace. “We want to win districts this year and have a great run in the playoffs.” Tomball is at least three deep in every position, according to Wallace, which she expects to be a big advantage as the season rolls along. Wallace wants the team to improve after every match, which may prove frightening to opponents after the Lady Cougars have rolled to a 9-1 start, including a five-game win against Magnolia and a championship in the Katy Tournament. Senior Roxanne McVey is a four-year varsity player, moving to outside hitter this year. She is expected to be a leader for the Lady Cougars. “I want to go undefeated in districts,” she said. “And go farther in the playoffs than we ever have.” McVey, who has committed to Mississippi State, says Tomball has the chance to be special. “We are all fighting for our positions (in practice) everyday,” McVey said. “We have some powerhouses and everyone is extra-competitive.” Senior outside hitter Sydney Ziober says the teams heart may be their biggest strength. “We may not be the tallest,” Ziober said, “but we play good defense, our chemistry is strong and we trust each other.”
