Wins come in bunches for area volleyball teams

ths mwhs volleyball Volleyball teams in Tomball and Magnolia have been busy since school started, with many competing in the huge 84-team Pearland Classic the week of Aug. 21.

 

Tomball Lady Cougars

 After winning the Katy Tournament in mid-August, The Tomball Lady Cougars have continued their winning ways.

After defeating Jersey Village on the road three games to none on Aug. 19, the Lady Cougars returned home on Aug. 23, blanking Seven Lakes 3-0.

 

Tomball then headed to Pearland for the famed Pearland Classic, which featured top ranked teams in all classifications. The Lady Cougars had a mixed bag of results, ending up 4-4 in the tournament. They defeated Stony Point, Lake Highland, Pearce and Marcus, while losing to Katy, Plano West, The Woodlands and the eventual tournament champions and nationally ranked Lake Travis.

 

Tomball then headed back home to face the Magnolia West Lady Mustangs. The Lady Cougars claimed their fifteenth victory of the season, blanking the Lady Mustangs 3-0. Sydney Ziober led Tomball with 15 kills.

 

The Lady Cougars participated in the Kingwood Tournament from Sept. 1-3, but results were unavailable as of press time. They are 15-5 this season.

 

Magnolia West Lady Mustangs

 The Magnolia West volleyball squad also participated in the Pearland Classic, posting a record of 1-6. The Lady Mustangs opened the first two days with six straight losses to Bellaire (16-25, 12-25), Richardson Pearce (13-25, 20-25), Cinco Ranch (15-25, 13-25), Brenham (19-25, 12-25), San Antonio O’Connor (16-25, 14-25) and St. Agnes (19-25, 19-25).

 

Magnolia West showed they still had fight in them by defeating LaPorte (13-25, 25-23, 25-20) on the final day. Kyla Ellis led the way with 18 digs in the victory, while Ashley Louviere added 26 assists.

 

The Lady Mustangs then ran into the Tomball Lady Cougars on Aug. 30, losing 17-25, 20-25 and 15-25, bringing their record to 10-13 on the year. Samantha Sellers led Magnolia West with nine kills.

 

The Lady Mustangs played at Conroe on Sept. 2, but results were not available as of press time.

 

Magnolia Lady Bulldogs

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs started the Pearland Tournament in fine fashion by winning all three opening day games. Magnolia defeated Katy Taylor (22-25, 25-14, 25-21), Alvin (25-21, 25-13) and Allen (25-23, 25-12).

 

The second day fared a bit worse as Magnolia fell to state-ranked teams San Antonio Johnson (13-25, 14-25) and Cy-Falls (10-25, 14-25). Magnolia did defeat Round Rock in three games to finish the day.

 

Magnolia began the final day with a tough loss to Pearce (19-25, 15-25), but bounced back over Smithson Valley (25-14, 23-25, 25-18). The win ensured a 5-3 record and enabled the Lady Bulldogs to finish 23rd out of 84 total teams.

 

Magnolia returned home on Aug. 30 to play Giddings. The Lady Bulldogs won all three games (25-18, 25-22, 25-10)  in route to improving their record to 12-10. Kylie Randall led Magnolia with 22 kills, while Alyssa Fulgium added 25 assists.
