Area teams have difficult week in football

Many area teams struggled this week with only Magnolia West coming out on top. Tomball, Magnolia and Waller all suffered big losses to the hands of their opponents.

Magnolia West Mustangs 42

Kingwood Park                 19

Mustang senior running back Desmond Richard had another fine performance on Sept. 1 racking up 206 yards on 35 carries with two touchdowns.

It didn’t look good for Magnolia West early, as Kingwood Park connected on an 89-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Pounds to running back Hayden Miller on the opening play of the game.

Richards answered for the Mustangs with a tough 12-yard touchdown run to tie the game at seven.

Kingwood Park would answer with a 26-yard run from Kevin Wright to take a 13-7 lead after one quarter of play.

The second quarter was all Mustangs as they added a 12-yard touchdown from senior quarterback Tyler Anderson. Anderson also found junior receiver Trevor Buckley in the end zone from 25 yards out to give Magnolia West a 21-13 halftime advantage.

The Mustang offense struggled during the third quarter, as they began with three consecutive punts. Kingwood Park then drove the length of the field to score on a 7-yard pass from Pounds to Tanner Schovasia. Magnolia West denied them the tying two-point conversion though and held on to a 21-19 lead.

After that it was all Mustangs as they rolled off 21 unanswered points to seal the victory. Richards added a 1-yard touchdown, while Anderson found senior receiver Tykoya Neal for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Matt Cruz had a 42-yard pick-six to round out the scoring.

Anderson was 13-27 passing for 200 yards and two touchdowns on the night, while Neal had 110 yards receiving on six catches.

Magnolia West (2-0) traveled to Willis on Sept. 9. Results were not available as of press time.

Rosenberg Terry 33

Waller Bulldogs    3

The Waller Bulldogs lost to Rosenberg Terry 33-3 on Sept. 2.  Despite the lopsided score, the Bulldogs won every statistical category except the score.  Six turnovers doomed the Bulldogs.

"If you take away the turnovers, including the four in the red zone when we were going in to score, this is a completely different game." Head Coach Jason Morley said.  "Terry is a good football team, but they did not dominate us.  Heck, they didn't even slow us down much.  This was a case of shooting ourselves in the foot and we can get that fixed."

Waller's offense outgained Terry's offense 328 yards to 220 yards.  Rhett Loewe had 192 yards passing, DJ Johnson had five receptions for 92 yards, Desmin Bray had five receptions for 78 yards, and Jyrin Broussard had four receptions for 28 yards.  The Bulldogs also rushed for 136 yards, led by Desmond Jordan who piled up 108 yards on 25 carries.  Josh Hunter, Derek Eckerman, TJ Nelson, Eric Huffman, Matt Stone, Andrew Rush and Israel Reyes all had good games for the Dogs.

Defensively, the Bulldogs held Terry to 220 total yards. The Rangers had 74 yards in the first half, and 51 of those came on two plays.  Colt Robinson led off the game with two vicious hits, the second one causing a fumble that the Bulldogs converted into three points. Von Ray Villareal and Nick Stubblefield played well at the defensive end positions.  Jordan Hamilton and Brandon Bryzcki played well in the interior line.  Colt Robinson, Colten Frisby, and Race Mellman made plays all over the field, and chased down Ranger ball carriers from sideline to sideline.  Hunter Schmidt, J'Wuan Ponteam, Quinton McDade, Jyrin Broussard and Cameron Madden made sure tackles in the secondary.

The Bulldogs had an open week and will play next on Sept. 16 when they travel to Richmond Foster.

Jersey Village    36

Tomball Cougars 7

The Tomball Cougars (0-2) struggled on both sides of the ball when they traveled to Houston Jersey Village on Sept. 2. The Cougars gave up 36 straight points before scoring themselves, leading to a 36-7 loss.

Jersey Village quarterback Clay Magnuson opened up the scoring when he found Connor Neagli for a 11-yard strike early in the game.

Jersey Village added 10 points in the second quarter, on a field goal from Hunter Pullig and another Magnuson to Neagli touchdown pass to take a 17-0 lead into halftime.

Two more touchdown passes by Magnuson and a 70-yard run by Victor Brown rounded out the scoring for Jersey Village, before Tomball could find the end zone.

The Cougars kept themselves from being shut out when senior quarterback Justin Dvorak found receiver Xavier Powell in the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown pass.

Dvorak was 18-32 passing for 195 yards and one touchdown. He also threw two interceptions. Dvorak also led all rushers with 67 yards on 21 carries.

Tomball hosted Katy Mayde Creek on senior night Sept. 9. Results were not available as of press time.
