Speed of Summer Creek too much for Magnolia

magnolia fb Once the lights literally went out during the Magnolia Bulldogs home opener, it seemed as if the lights went out for the Bulldogs chances to win as well.

The Bulldogs (1-1)  were walloped 41-3 by Summer Creek on Sept. 2, a week after an impressive victory over Galena Park.

Summer Creek sophomore quarterback Aaron Sharp was lights out, completing over 80-percent of his passes, while racking up 268 yards and five touchdowns.

After Summer Creek went ahead 7-0 with a first quarter touchdown toss from Sharp, both teams traded some sloppy play until the seven-minute mark of the second quarter. At that moment the lights went dark in the stadium and remained off for several minutes, forcing both teams to try and keep loose.

It looked as if the break was just what Magnolia needed at first, as kicker Gunnar Downey attoned for an earlier miss by kicking a 23-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to 7-3.

It seemed as if the defense came up huge after the score, forcing a three-and-out situation, but Summer Creek converted on a fake punt attempt. Summer Creek would then drive down the field for a touchdown, but not without some controversy. Sharp threw the ball away on third down, however Magnolia was flagged for pass interference. Head Coach Shawn Bell argued that the ball was uncatchable, but to no avail. Sharp then gave Summer Creek a 14-3 lead on a 10-yard strike to end the first half.

The call took the wind out of Magnolia, as Summer Creek rolled off 27 answered points in the second half to roll 41-3.

Several Bulldog players went down with injuries during the game.

Quarterback Shyerome Harris led all Magnolia rushers with 81 yards on 17 carries, while backup quarterback Noah McGowan completed 3-4 passes for 44 yards.

The Bulldogs next challenge comes against Houston Westbury, at home, Sept. 16.
