Tomball fights to get first victory

tomball football The Tomball Cougars earned their first victory of the season on Sept. 9, beating a visiting Katy Mayde Creek team 24-14.

The game started out as well as Tomball could hope for as Mayde Creek fumbled the ball away at their own 26-yard-line on the second play from scrimmage. Senior defensive lineman Donald Preston recovered the fumble.

Senior quarterback Justin Dvorak wasted no time in getting the Cougars on the scoreboard as he found receiver Jameson Johnson in the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown strike. The extra-point put the Cougars ahead 7-0 with less than a minute played in the game.

Mayde Creek quarterback Tyler Dickson then atoned for his earlier mistake as he threw for a 65-yard touchdown to even the score at seven.

Tomball then had a 10-play drive stall just short of the red zone and kicker Chadd Brown missed a 40-yard field goal attempt wide left.

Mayde Creek then orchestrated a 10-play 76-yard drive that was capped by a six-yard touchdown run by Donito Harris. The extra point gave Mayde Creek a 14-7 lead in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Cougar defensive back Josh Stults intercepted a Dickson pass and ran it back to the Mayde Creek 29-yard line. The turnover resulted in another field goal attempt by Brown. The kick from Brown found the uprights this time, cutting the deficit to 14-10 in favor of Mayde Creek.

After a defensive stand aided by lost yardage on another fumble by Dickson, the Cougars then went on a six-play, 41-yard drive. Running back Xavier Powell took it in from three yards out to give Tomball a 17-14 lead heading into the half.

The second half started just as good for the Cougars as the first half did, as Dvorak and Powell led the team downfield for a score. Brown topped off the 11-play drive with a two-yard touchdown run to give the Cougars a 24-14 lead they would not relinquish. Powell had 33 rushing yards during the drive, while Dvorak added 23 rushing yards and 13 yards passing.

Both teams traded punts and turnovers throughout the rest of the second half, as the defenses stepped up, flying all over the field. Mayde Creek’s last ditch effort ended in an interception on the Tomball 27-yard-line by Jameson Johnson with 25 seconds left to play.

The win gave Tomball a record of 1-2 on the season. The Cougars relaxed during their off week and play next at Westfield on Sept. 24.
