| Concordia, Magnolia West win in close fashion |
|
Only half of the area football teams were in action the week of Sept. 12, but it was an excellent week for those that were. Concordia Lutheran Crusaders 28 Hitchcock 21 A game that seemed like it may get out of hand early, turned out to be a nail biter in the end, as Concordia held on for a 28-21 victory over Hitchcock on Sept. 9. The Crusaders started the scoring early when quarterback Nathan Potter found Chance Gray for an eight-yard touchdown, just over two minutes into the game. Towards the end of the first quarter Potter found Gray again, this time for a 74-yard bomb, to put the Crusaders up 14-0 heading into the second period. After a barreling touchdown run by a Hitchcock back cut the deficit in half, Josh Amelunke found pay dirt on a nine-yard run to put Concordia up 21-7. Amelunke once again put the Crusaders up by 14 in the third quarter on a 21-yard romp to the end zone. Hitchcock cut the deficit to seven and were threatening to tie the game late in the final quarter when the Crusaders forced a turnover on their own 10-yard line to seal the victory. Gray led all rushers with 100 yards on 13 carries and added 82 yards receiving, while Potter had 94 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Concordia Lutheran hosted Houston Christian on Sept. 16. Results were not available at press time. Magnolia West Mustangs 24 Willis 21 After a trying week of forced evacuations, cancelled classes, smoke and worry, Mustang players were looking for some time away from the chaos and heartache. Instead they got a wild second half of back and forth action. Magnolia West had to claw their way back---after falling behind late in the fourth quarter to Willis---and hung on for the 24-21 victory. The win improved Magnolia West to 3-0 on the year. Mustang phenom running back Desmond Richards started off the scoring in the first quarter with a 13-yard touchdown run with just over two minutes to play. Neither team would score again in the first half. Richards started the second half fireworks with a 19-yard touchdown run that put the Mustangs up 14-0 early. Willis answered with two straight third quarter scores to tie the game at 14 heading into the final quarter. After a Magnolia West drive stalled in the red zone, Andrew Struthers booted a 27-yard field goal to give the Mustangs a 17-14 lead. Willis would then need only two-and-a-half minutes to take their first lead of the ball game, 21-17, on a one-yard touchdown run. Then the Magnolia West senior leaders Richards and quarterback Tyler Anderson took over. Anderson found Richards in the corner of the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown throw to give the Mustangs the lead at 24-21. The Mustangs had to withstand one last drive by Willis, but the defense batted down a 30-yard pass in the end zone as time expired. Richards led all rushers with 179 yards on 30 carries and three total touchdowns. This was his first game under 200 yards rushing this season. Anderson was 13-24 for 172 yards and the touchdown strike to Richards. Magnolia West had their off week and will play next at home against Brenham on Sept. 23.
