Local volleyball teams garner up success

With district play just starting up, area volleyball teams are fine tuning their game while keeping their eye on a possible district championship.

 

Waller Lady Bulldogs

The Waller High School Lady Bulldog varsity volleyball team started district play with a win over Stratford (26-28, 25-18, 25-18, 13-25, 21-19) Sept. 9.  Junior Morgan Heise led the Lady Bulldogs to victory with 17 kills and 26 digs. Senior Kamryn Dimas led the team with 42 assists. Junior Taylor Thomas added 14 kills and 20 digs. The Lady Bulldogs also defeated Crosby (25-11, 25-16, and 25-10) on Sept. 6. Kelsey Johnson was the player of the week. The Lady Bulldogs are now 23-3 on the season.

 

The junior varsity team lost to Stratford (14-25, 25-20, 13-25), and Taylor Barkley was named junior varsity player of the week. The sophomore team traveled to Columbus on Sept. 8-10 and played in the Columbus JV Tournament. They defeated Brazosport (22-25, 25-14, 25-14) and lost to Bellville (18-25, 19-25) and Needville (15-25, 25-21, 18-25).  The freshman A team also lost to Stratford (10-25, 11-25). Asja Jackson was named the freshman A player of the week. The freshman B team lost to Crosby (8-25, 7-25) and Stratford (25-21, 20-25, 19-25). Autumn Williams was named freshman B player of the week.

 

Magnolia West Lady Mustangs

While firefighters battling the raging wildfires finally gained ground around Magnolia, the Magnolia West Lady Mustangs had a successful week battling some tough teams. Samantha Sellers led Magnolia West to a dominant 25-6, 25-13, 25-22 win over Spring Woods on Sept. 9. Sellars had 10 kills while adding 16 digs and Katelin Petrovich had 25 assists. Kayla Ellis added 14 digs and two aces, while Karli Nanny had 15 digs and 11 kills.

 

The Lady Mustangs had another dominant performance winning 25-3, 25-8 and 25-10 an overmatched Northbrook squad. Petrovich had 16 assists and nine aces, while Nanny and Sellars paced the frontline with six and seven kills each. The win evened the Lady Mustangs record at 13-13. They are now 2-0 in district play.

 

Magnolia West hosted Waller in district play on Sept. 16. Results were not available as of press time.

 

Magnolia Lady Bulldogs

The Lady Bulldogs have raced to a 2-0 start in district play, after wins over Brenham and Stratford.

 

The Lady Bulldogs hosted Brenham on Sept. 9 and came away with a hard fought victory (16-25, 25-13, 25-21, 18-25, 15-11). Kylie Randall led Magnolia with 19 kills, 14 digs, two aces and three blocks. Shayna Daniels contributed 25 assists while Kaitlyn McShan added 10 kills and 11 digs.

 

The Lady Bulldogs then traveled to Stratford on Sept. 13, where they found it a bit easier, in a straight set win. The Lady Bulldogs won 25-22, 25-12 and 25-13, powered by 23 aces as a team. Magnolia was once again led by Randall, who had 17 kills. Daniels and Alyssa Fulgium had 25 assists between them, while McShan added 11 digs.

 

The Lady Bulldogs ran their season record to 16-11 while improving to 2-0 in district play. Magnolia hosted Montgomery on Sept. 16. Results were not available at press time.
