| Tomball Christian wins again, while Waller, Magnolia fall |
|
Cooler weather has arrived, but the football action is heating up for several area teams, as district play draws near. Magnolia West and Tomball used the recent week to rest up and heal some lingering injuries, while Magnolia, Waller and Tomball Christian were all in action.
Waller Bulldogs 22 Foster 41
The Waller Bulldogs came up short against the Foster Falcons on Sept. 16, 41-22. The loss put Waller at 0-3 on the season.
"I'm very pleased with our kids' effort,” coach Jason Morley said. “They are giving us everything they have. We are still giving our opponents too much. I think we gave up three or four cheap touchdowns tonight. We seem to have a breakdown here and there that comes at critical times. We have to clean that up. We had some injuries this evening that we will have to battle through. This game is about overcoming adversity and we have some staring us right in the face. But these are tough kids, and we will fight through it."
Offensively, the Bulldogs rolled up 378 yards. Rhett Loewe was 20 of 36 for 235 yards and three touchdowns. He completed throws to six different receivers: DJ Johnson, Jyrin Broussard, Eric Huffman, Desmin Bray, John Landin and Hunter Schmidt. Johnson had three touchdown receptions. Hunter Schmidt led the way running the football with 12 carries for 84 yards in the first half. Colten Fisby, Cameron Madden, and Eric Huffman also carried the ball for the Bulldogs. The offensive line of Israel Reyes, Josh Hunter, Derek Eckermann, Andrew Rush, and Matt Stone protected Loewe from the pass rush all night.
Defensively, the Bulldogs tried a multitude of coverage schemes against the Falcon's no huddle offense. The defense held for the majority of the evening, although several times the defense was placed in some difficult situations giving Foster a short field to work with. Jordan Hamilton, Zach Hendrix, Race Mellman, Von Ray Villareal, Brandon Bryzcki, Hunter Schmidt, Travis Johnson, J'wuan Ponteau, Quinton McDade, and Cameron Madden played well for the defense. Several Bulldogs players had to play different positions during the game due to injuries that occurred.
The Bulldogs will open district play this Friday night against the Spring Woods Tigers. This is also Homecoming for Waller High School. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
Tomball Christian Warriors 65 Emery-Weiner 64
The most exciting game of the week and perhaps the year occurred in the independent six-man circuit, as the Tomball Christian home school team came from behind in the final seconds to win 65-64 over Emery-Weiner.
The Warriors got a touchdown run by David Hiley with just 30 seconds left to play to pull within one point. Hiley scored the two-point conversion to give the Warriors the win.
Hiley’s touchdown run was set up by a long 40-yard pass from quarterback Mitchell Byrum to center Austin Frey. Tomball Christian is now 4-0 for the season and ranked number-four in TCAL Division 1 according to the website sixmanfootball.com.
Magnolia Bulldogs 0 Westbury 10
In a night filled with weird anomalies, it was no surprise that a defensive battle ensued once action got underway when Magnolia hosted Westbury on Sept. 16.
Kickoff was delayed nearly a half-hour because the team from Westbury was delayed after their bus broke down. To top it off, a steer wandered onto the nearby practice field just before kickoff.
Magnolia’s first drive started off well enough, as they drove deep into Westbury territory. Magnolia Head Coach Andy Sexton decided to go for it on fourth-and-one, but the Bulldogs couldn’t convert.
From that point on the Bulldogs put together a few nice drives, but turnovers would prove their demise, as both Westbury scores came on the heels of Magnolia fumbles.
Magnolia quarterback Shyerome Harris paced the Bulldogs with 98 yards rushing on 21 attempts, but the Bulldog offense otherwise sputtered, gaining only 219 total yards.
The loss put Magnolia at 1-2 for the season, heading into District 17-4A play. The Bulldogs traveled to Northbrook on Sept. 23 for their first district contest. Results were not available as of press time. Comments (2)

One correction, is that the winning touchdown run was by David Hiley, not Hylee.
