District play heats up for area volleyball teams

There were some big rivalry matchups on the volleyball scene recently, with Magnolia West cooling off a hot Waller squad, while Magnolia defeated cross-town rivals Magnolia West in a big district matchup.

 

Waller Lady Bulldogs

The Waller High School Lady Bulldog varsity volleyball team won a big district matchup over Montgomery (25-22, 25-21, 19-25, 25-11) on Sept. 13. The Lady Bulldogs lost some of their momentum though, falling to Magnolia West (16-25, 25-19, 23-25, 16-25) on Sept. 16. Junior Morgan Heise had 21 kills and 42 digs for the week. Junior Taylor Thomas had 27 kills. Senior Kamryn Dimas led the team with 80 assists. Taylor Thomas was the player of the week. The Lady Bulldogs are 24-4 for the season and 2-1 in district play.

 

The junior varsity team lost to Montgomery (22-25, 22-25) and Magnolia West (16-25, 23-25). Laura Mulins was named junior varsity player of the week. The sophomore and the junior varsity squads joined together and competed in the Porter JV Tournament on Sept. 15-17. The team placed third in the tournament by defeating Porter (25-15, 25-14), Coldspring (25-12, 25-5) and Alpha Omega (25-22, 25-12). The team split games with Tarkington (27-25, 23-25) and Huntsville (24-26, 25-14) and they lost to Rudder (16-25, 9-25). Rayden Summers was the sophomore team player of the week.

 

Magnolia Lady Bulldogs

The Lady Bulldogs continued their hot streak by defeating both Montgomery and Magnolia West in district play.

 

Magnolia hosted Montgomery on Sept. 16 and won all three games over the Lady Bears 25-22, 25-20 and 25-22. Kylie Randall led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 kills, while Madison Butler added eight. Shayna Daniels jump started Magnolia’s attack with 19 assists while Alyssa Fulgium contributed 13 more. Kaitlyn McShan added 12 digs and three aces for the night.

 

The Lady Bulldogs then hosted cross-town rival Magnolia West on Sept. 20. Magnolia came out on top for the 19-25, 25-22, 26-24 and 25-11 victory. The win kept Magnolia (20-11, overall) perfect in district play at 4-0.

 

Daniels once again led the team in kills with 17, while Butler added 13. Daniels had 26 assists and Fulgium 18 and seven aces. Fulgium, Amanda Krenek and Allison Woods all contributed 10 digs in the win.

 

Magnolia West Lady Mustangs

The Lady Mustangs had a mixed bag of results early in district play, as they handed Waller just their fourth loss of the season on Sept. 16, while falling to hometown rival Magnolia on Sept. 20.

 

Magnolia West took it to Waller early, winning the first game 25-16, before falling in the second game 19-25. The Lady Mustangs recovered to win the next two games (25-23, 25-16) to take the match.

 

Samantha Sellars led Magnolia West with 20 kills, two blocks, six aces and 12 digs for the match. Karli Nanny added 11 kills and 24 digs, while Ashley Louviere contributed two aces, 16 assists and 14 digs.

Katelin Petrovich had four kills and 11 assists, while Kyla Ellis added 25 digs.

 

The Lady Mustangs then traveled down FM 1488 to Magnolia to take on the Lady Bulldogs in district play. Magnolia West fought hard, but came up a bit short. losing 25-19, 22-25, 26-24 and 25-11.

Sellars had 11 kills and 16 digs, while Nanny contributed 11 kills and 16 digs. Petrovich added 14 assists, 10 digs and five kills on the night.

 

The loss was Magnolia West’s first in district play and saw them fall to 14-14 on the season.

 

Tomball Lady Cougars

The Lady Cougars also had mixed results in recent volleyball action as they defeated Klein on Sept. 16, but fell to a tough Klein Collins team on Sept. 20.

 

The Lady Cougars hosted Klein and won in convincing fashion 25-17, 25-13, 25-9. Tomball was led by Sydney Ziober’s 10 kills.

 

The Lady Cougars next played Klein Collins in District 13-5A play. Sydney Ziober’s 10 kills weren’t enough to help the Lady Cougars to victory, as they fell 23-25, 18-25 and 22-25. The loss dropped Tomball to 20-9 on the season and 3-1 in districts.
