Mustangs falter, lose first game of season

magnolia west fb Magnolia West suffered some big breakdowns at the end of the first half, as Brenham went on to defeat the Mustangs 47-13 on Sept. 23.

After a Brenham touchdown with five minutes to play in the first, Magnolia West went on a long touchdown drive, capped off by a three-yard touchdown run from Desmond Richards. Richards had a long 40-yard reception on a pass from quarterback Tyler Anderson to set up the score.

Brenham answered on their first drive of the second quarter to take a 13-6 lead, where it stayed until just over three minutes remained in the second half. Brenham scored on an eight-yard touchdown throw to take a 20-6 lead, but on their next possession linebacker Pierce Latham put a huge hit on the Cub quarterback, causing a fumble.

With the ball deep in Brenham territory, the Mustangs looked poised to get right back into the game before the half. Anderson, however, was sacked on a blitz by the Cub defense and turned the ball right back over to Brenham. The Cubs then went on to score two touchdowns in the final minute of the half to take a 33-6 lead.

After Brenham scored on their first possession of the second half, the Mustangs finally showed some offensive life as Richards trotted 73 yards downfield for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 40-13.

That would be it for the Magnolia West offense, however, as Brenham scored once more to take the 47-13 victory.

The loss dropped the Mustangs to 3-1 on the season and 0-1 in district play.

Anderson was 11-19 for 182 yards on the night, but was harassed by the Brenham defense all night and was sacked seven times. Richards ran only five times, but had 81 yards and both Mustang touchdowns. He also had two receptions for 99 yards. Tyoka Neal added 34 yards on two receptions.

The Mustangs traveled to Montgomery on Sept. 30 in another district matchup. Results were not available as of press time.
