District football action is heating up

The second week of district play almost saw a huge upset, a couple of close games between area powers and a blowout win.

Waller Bulldogs 20

#2 Brenham       42

The Waller High School Bulldogs traveled to Brenham on Sept. 30, to take on the Texas Class 4A second-ranked Cubs. Waller jumped out to a 10-0 lead and then the Cubs, with their four Division 1 committed players caught fire.

“Anytime you play well against a very good team, you feel pretty good as a coach,” Waller Head Coach Jason Morley said. “Our kids battled them for the entire four quarters and never gave up.  I was very proud of them for that.  No one has run the ball on their defense like we did tonight.”

Waller’s offense was led by Desmond Jordan, Eric Huffman, Derek Eckerman, Matt Stone, Andrew Rush, Josh Hunter and Matt Leviner.  Jordan had 29 carries for 181 yards and two touchdowns. The offensive line also did not allow a sack. Brenham recorded 15 sacks the previous week.  DJ Johnson and Desmin Bray had some nice grabs on the night.  Johnson also managed to draw three pass interference penalties against the Cubs. The Bulldogs racked up 16 first downs against the number one defense in the district.

Denny Garcia connected on both extra point attempts and two field goals.  His 47-yard field goal is believed to be a school record.

The Bulldogs are currently tied for second place in district play. Waller hosted Montgomery on Oct. 7. Results were not available as of press time.

Magnolia West Mustangs 21

Montgomery                      14

After a disappointing loss against state-ranked Brenham, Magnolia West was looking for a breakout game against Montgomery.

The Mustangs got it with a hard-fought 21-14 victory on Sept. 30, for the teams first-ever win against the Bears.

All-world running back Desmond Richards had another fine performance, rushing for 184 yards on 30 carries in the victory. He had two touchdown runs.

The Mustangs began the scoring on a pass from quarterback Tyler Anderson to Zeke Bronson.

Montgomery’s top-ranked offense answered right back on a 14-yard touchdown pass to even the game up at seven.

Richards gave the Mustangs the lead for good with a 51-yard score. He later added a five-yard touchdown run to put Magnolia West up 21-7 with four minutes to play in the first half.

The defense employed a bend but don’t break philosophy, as they gave up more than 300 yards of total offense. The Mustangs forced two turnovers, however, which turned the tide of the game.

The win improved Magnolia West to 4-1 on the season and 1-1 in District 17-4A play.

The Mustangs hosted Northbrook on Oct. 7. Results were not available as of press time.

#1 Concordia Lutheran Crusaders 21

#6 Northland Christian                    14

Only one team was coming out of this battle still unscathed, and it was the Concordia Lutheran Crusaders who remained perfect on the season, after a 21-14 win over Northland Christian.

The Crusaders struck first, when quarterback Nathan Potter scored on a five-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter.

It seemed as if Concordia may run away with it, as they marched down field for another score. A 13-play, 82-yard drive was completed when Potter scored his second rushing touchdown, giving the Crusaders a 14-0 lead.

Concordia’s ability to sustain long, clock-eating drives seemed to be the answer to Northland’s quick strike offense. The Crusaders went on a 19-play, 98-yard drive to eat up clock and push their lead back to 14, at 21-7.

After Northland seemed to immediately score, cutting the lead to 21-14, the Crusaders continued with their power running game and were able to eat up the rest of the game clock, securing the win.

Chance Gray led all Crusader runners with 133 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. Eddie Brucculeri added 118 yards on just 10 carries.

The win improved Concordia to 5-0 on the season. The team is currently ranked number one in TAPPS Division II by maxpreps.com.

Magnolia Bulldogs 42

Spring Woods          7

After a dreary start to the season, the Magnolia Bulldogs now find themselves with a winning record and a tie for first in District 17-4A, after a blowout win against Spring Woods.

Senior quarterback Chase Gragert led the way for the Bulldogs, scoring four touchdowns in the 42-7 win.

Gragert got the scoring-fest started after Magnolia found themselves down 7-0 early. Gragert raced 21-yards for the touchdown, cutting the deficit to 7-6.

After a Spring Woods fumble, Gragert scored again and also ran in the two-point conversion to give the Bulldogs a 14-7 lead.

Magnolia would take a 28-7 lead into halftime and never look back, as they rolled to improve to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in district play.

Gragert led the Bulldogs with 117 yards rushing on 13 carries and three touchdowns. He also added 100 yards through the air and another touchdown.

Greg Solomon added 59 yards rushing on five touches and a touchdown, while Gabe Evans had two catches for 100 yards and a score.

Magnolia traveled to Stratford on Oct. 7. Results were not available as of press time.
