Mustangs cruise to fifth win of season

magnolia west fb The Magnolia West Mustangs showed why they are a feared team as they completely dismantled Northbrook 51-7 on Oct. 7. The victory gave the home crowd something else to smile about during homecoming week.

Mustangs Head Coach Shawn Bell said the biggest challenge is always the distractions surrounding an event-filled homecoming week.

“You always worry about the distractions,” Bell said. “The kids handled our business early and we were able to come up with the win.”

And handle their business the Mustangs did, racing out to a 44-0 halftime lead to take control of the contest.

Desmond Richards had another outstanding night running the ball, amassing 217 yards on just 14 carries. Four of those runs ended as touchdowns, including a 61-yarder. Richards has had 100-plus yards rushing in every contest, except for the loss to Brenham.

“We base our entire offense around him,” Bell said. “His running allows us to open up a passing game (for quarterback Tyler Anderson). The better he plays the better we are.”

“He’s just a phenomenal football player,” Bell added.

The Mustangs racked up 390 yard of total offense with 313 of that coming on the ground. Besides Richmond, Justin Eckert added 66 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. Matt Golden also had a touchdown rushing the ball.

Anderson didn’t have to throw much, due to the success of the ground game and ended up 2-4 for 61 yards and a touchdown. Trevor Buckley was the recipient of the 41-yard touchdown pass from Anderson.

Magnolia West’s defense didn’t allow Northbrook to get untracked, holding them to 98 total yards for the game. Will Hicks intercepted a Northbrook pass and returned it 12 yards.

Next up for the Mustangs was a matchup against cross-town rival and district foe Magnolia on Oct. 14. Results were not available as of press time.

“It’s always a big rivalry,” Bell said of the matchup. “(Magnolia) lost a heartbreaker (to Stratford), but they keep getting better every week.”

“We have to get their offense off the field and take advantage of every chance we get on offense,” he added.
