Local soccer teams playoff stays cut short

Three local high school soccer teams saw their postseasons cut short with early round playoff losses last week.

The Tomball boys and girls and the Magnolia girls squads each suffered defeats, ending their successful 2009 campaigns.

The Tomball Cougars finished the regular season 10-6-1 overall and 6-4-1 in district 13-5A play, good for a fourth place finish and the district’s final playoff berth.

Going into the Region III bi-district round as a fourth seed, the Cougars were paired with 14-5A champion The Woodlands Highlanders.

The Woodlands took a 1-0 lead in the first half and pulled away with a pair of goals in the second. Tomball’s lone goal by Mark Frye was not enough, as the Cougars fell 3-1. With the win, the Highlanders went on to face Cy Woods in the second round. The Woodlands’ scorers included Parker Kink, Connor Mowery and Andrew Norman.

The Lady Cougars suffered a similar fate as their male counterparts after finishing the season 11-10-1 overall and 8-6 in district play, also good for fourth place.

And like the Cougars, they too matched up against The Woodlands in the first round.

Also like the Cougars, the Lady Cougars could not mount enough offense to fend off the Lady Highlanders.

The contest was essentially over at halftime, after The Woodlands netted five goals in the first half. Tomball finally got on the board in the second half with a goal from Megan Phillips, but it was too little, too late as the Lady Highlanders tacked on another second half goal to make the final score 6-1.

Scoring for The Woodlands was Molly Missimer, Hannah Stanifer, Kylie cook, Olivia Kintigh, and Meghan Gibbons.

Also on the losing end of their playoff contest was the Magnolia Lady Bulldogs. After a stellar regular season that saw them go 12-5 overall and 11-3 in district, the Lady Bulldogs finished in second place in 18-4A.

By a draw, the Lady Bulldogs earned a first round bye in the Region III Class 4A playoffs, but were rewarded with a second round match up against Lumberton, who hammered Beaumont Central 14-0 in the first round.

The Lady Bulldogs kept it much closer than that, holding Lumberton to just two goals. But the Magnolia offense could never quite get going as they were shutout on their way to the defeat.
