Magnolia West, Concordia secure playoff bids with wins

mwhs waller football The Magnolia West Mustangs rolled into the Texas state playoffs on a high note, after demolishing Waller 45-0 on Nov. 4. Senior tailback Desmond Richards rolled off 269 rushing yards and Magnolia West had 537 total yards as a team.

The Mustangs scored first on a two-yard run by Desmond Richards and never looked back. Quarterback Tyler Anderson threw two touchdown passes−a 14-yard and a 26-yard to Tykoya Neal−and Richards added two more on the ground, as Magnolia West took a 35-0 lead into halftime.

“Coming in, we knew we had to try to contain (Richards),” Waller head coach Jason Morley said. “We knew he would get some yards, but we had to get to him early.  He is the leading rusher in the Houston area and he didn’t get there by accident.”

Anderson finished 9-10 passing for 165 yards and two scores, while Neal had four catches for 69 yards.

Waller lost their starting quarterback and tailback in the first half to injuries, causing them big headaches on the offensive side of the ball.

Waller finished 3-7 for the season, while the Mustangs finished the regular season 8-2. The Mustangs took on Summer Creek in bi-district play Nov. 12 in Conroe. Results were not available as of press time.
