Magnolia West rolls to first playoff win in history

mag west fb Making school history is never easy, but the Magnolia West Mustangs sure made it look that way, rolling over Summer Creek 41-19 to win the first playoff game in school history, Nov. 12.

After falling behind to start the game, the Mustangs fought back behind 276 yards from running back Desmond Richards.

Summer Creek took a 6-0 lead less than four minutes into the game, but Richards brought Magnolia West back with a 37-yard touchdown run to put the Mustangs up 7-6.

Andrew Struthers then kicked a 20-yard field goal to extend the Mustang lead to 10-6, early in the second quarter.

The game seemed as if it would take a back-and-forth pace, as Summer Creek scored to take a 12-10 lead, but Mustang quarterback Tyler Anderson had an answer just before halftime. He found Tykoya Neal for a 23-yard touchdown strike and Magnolia West was ahead 17-12 at the half.

The third quarter was a defensive battle, as the only scoring was another Struthers field goal, extending the Mustang lead to 20-12.

Richards then seemed to give Magnolia West complete control on a one-yard touchdown run, but Summer Creek had fight left in them, cutting the lead to 27-19 with nine minutes to play.

The Mustangs answered with another Anderson-to-Neal touchdown five minutes later and Barry Carter iced the win, intercepting a Summer Creek pass and taking it 68 yards for the score.

The Mustangs took on Dayton in the Area round of the state playoffs Nov. 19. Results were not available as of press time.
