Magnolia West’s playoff run comes to an end

mwhs fb After holding Summer Creek’s vaunted offense in check, Magnolia West finally ran into an offensive machine they couldn’t stop, as the Mustangs lost an area playoff contest to Dayton 41-23 Nov. 19.

 

Dayton was able to roll off 17 straight points before Magnolia West could get on the scoreboard with a 27-yard field goal from kicker Andrew Struthers, early in the second quarter.

Dayton found the end zone again before Mustang running back Desmond Richards scored the first Mustang touchdown to cut the lead to 24-9.

 

Dayton would run the score to 41-9 late in the third period, before the Mustangs found any groove at all.

 

Magnolia West showed some fight in the game’s final moments, as Richards scored on a 76-yard run and Anthony Ojeda barreled in from one-yard out, to cut the final deficit to a respectable 41-23 score.

 

Richards finished his outstanding career with 186 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns. Receiver Tyler Resendez had 112 yards on four catches. Magnolia West earned 347 yards as a team, but had three costly turnovers as well.

 

The Mustangs finished the season 9-3 and earned their first playoff victory in school history Nov. 12 against Summer Creek.
