Lady Bulldogs bring home Livingston championship

magnolia girls basketball Magnolia’s Lady Bulldog team is on a roll at the moment, as they recentky took home the championship trophy of the Livingston Tournament, defeating Nacogdoches, Pasadena Sam Rayburn, Hardin Jefferson and Diboll.

 

Magnolia head coach Erika Ritter said it was the perfect opportunity to shake off the holiday rust.

 

“I thought it was a great tournament to go to after 10 days off during holiday break,” she said. “The girls played really well and we were able to come out on top.”

 

First up for the Lady Bulldogs was Nacogdoches and the game was never truly in doubt, as Magnolia moved into the winner’s bracket with a 59-30 victory. Allison Abendschein and ShaQ Fuselier led Magnolia with 12 points each, while Amy Henry contributed eight.

 

Pasadena Sam Rayburn would be up next for the Lady Bulldogs and once again they rolled, cruising to a 68-45 victory. Abendschein led Magnolia with 16 points, while Ambra Davis pumped in 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Ashley Richardson was the third Lady Bulldog in double figures with 10 points.

 

In what turned out to be the true championship game of the tournament, Magnolia held off Hardin Jefferson 50-44 in the semifinals. Abendschein once again had a great game, contributing a double-double, with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Davis had a great showing on the boards as well, pulling down 15 rebounds.

 

The final contest for the Lady Bulldogs was the championship game against Diboll and Magnolia placed three players in double figure scoring, winning 57-36. Davis led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Henry added 14 points and five assists. Fuselier also put in 11 points in the win.

 

Following the tournament win, Magnolia jumped right back into district play Jan. 3, taking on cross-town rival Magnolia West. The Lady Bulldogs showed off some impressive defensive work, holding the Lady Mustangs to a total of three points in the second half, securing the 68-22 victory.  Four Lady Bulldogs had double figures in scoring, led by 14 from Fuselier. Caitlin Lawrence added 13 points, Henry 12 points and Abendschein 10 points.

 

The win pushed Magnolia’s record to 15-7 on the season and 4-0 in district play.
