The Lady Mustangs have battled through several weeks of adversity this season, en route to a 9-16 record, something that coach Jennifer Fleming hopes to change. “Unfortunately we have had to deal with some injuries and illnesses the middle part of this season,” Fleming said. “We are hoping to make some improvements this next round of district play.” After a heartbreaking 52-46 loss to Stratford Jan. 6, Magnolia West came out of their recent funk in a big way, against Spring Woods Jan. 10. The Lady Mustangs raced to a 34-11 halftime lead and never looked back, in defeating Spring Woods 70-21. Kat Merner led three Magnolia West players in double figures with 13 points. Taylor Parsons added 12 points, while Mary Baer contributed 10. Magnolia Lady Bulldogs The recently red hot Lady Bulldogs continued their winning ways, winning two recent district games. On Jan. 6, Magnolia traveled to Waller to take on their district rival. After Magnolia jumped out to a 14-6 first quarter lead, Waller was able to play the Lady Bulldogs tight the rest of the way, but Magnolia hung on for the 47-34 win. Allison Abendschein led Magnolia with 15 points, while both Shaquania Fuselier and Ambra Davis added 11 points each. The Lady Bulldogs then hosted Brenham Jan. 10, putting their 10-game winning streak on the line. After battling to an 11-all tie in the first quarter, the Lady Bulldogs were able to edge their way to a 23-21 halftime lead. While Brenham fought to keep pace with Magnolia, the Lady Bulldogs were able to hold on for a thrilling 41-40 win. Fuselier led Magnolia with 14 points, while Abendschein added 10. The victory pushed Magnolia to a 17-7 record overall and 6-0 in district play. Tomball Lady Cougars The Lady Cougars continued their up and down season after recently splitting a pair of games with two district rivals. The Lady Cougars hosted Klein Jan. 6 and raced to a 14-4 first quarter lead. The outburst proved to be enough, as both teams battled evenly the rest of the way and Tomball took a 49-39 win. Caitlin Diaz was a one-woman show, scoring 29 points for the Lady Cougars, while Allayna Waters added 14. Next up for Tomball was a district contest against Klein Collins. Collins proved to be too much for the Lady Cougars early, as they raced to an 18-7 lead. However, Tomball slowly chipped away and by the end of the third period they trailed by just three, 36-33. Collins closed out the Lady Cougars with a tough fourth quarter though, taking the 52-40 win. Diaz once again led Tomball in scoring with 17 points. The loss dropped the Lady Cougars to 15-9 on the season.
