Magnolia winning streak comes to an end; Tomball struggles

Magnolia Bulldogs

The Magnolia Bulldogs recently saw a winning streak come to an end, but not before they destroyed a district rival.

Magnolia hosted rival and fellow Bulldog mascot Waller in a district game Jan.6.

Magnolia ran out to a 39-17 halftime lead and were never seriously challenged, winning their eighth straight game. Jesse Jones led Magnolia with 14 points, while Alex Hardee added 13 points for the game.

Next up for the Bulldogs was a trip to Brenham, to take on a team they were fighting with for the district lead.

Brenham jumped out to a 46-29 lead, by the end of the third quarter and Magnolia seemed to be facing certain defeat.

The Bulldogs would not go down without a fight however, scoring 33 points in the final quarter. Brenham did just enough to hold on, however, as the Bulldogs fell 67-62.

Jones led Magnolia with 24 points, while Hardee added 17 points.

Tomball Cougars

The Tomball Cougars tough season continued, as a pair of district losses ran their losing streak to four since the start of the new year.

The Cougars traveled to Klein High School Jan. 6 to take on the Bearkats in district play.

Everything seemingly started fine for the Cougars, as they led 14-13 after one period of play. The wheels fell off in the middle period though, as Klein rolled off a 38-19 run to take command.

The Cougars played better in the final period, but the deficit was too much to overcome, as Tomball fell 69-49.

Marqueese Grayson led the Cougars with 15 points, while Matt Clark added 12.

Next up for Tomball was a district contest against Klein Collins Jan. 10.

Again Tomball fell behind early and couldn’t catch up, falling 75-60.

The losses put Tomball’s record under .500 at 11-12. They are 0-4 in district play.
