Waller’s Johnson selected for college all-star game

Waller native Cody Johnson, a fullback for the Texas Longhorns, was selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game Jan. 21. However, Johnson was unable to participate in the game, due to other commitments.

This is the 87th version of the all-star competition and will feature college players from all across the nation.

Johnson was a standout at Waller, rushing for more than 3,000 yards while averaging nearly 10 yards per carry and 40 touchdowns over his junior and senior seasons. After being named to the Associated Press and Texas Sports Writers Association all-state teams, Johnson committed to Texas in 2007.

Johnson was a touchdown machine at Texas. His 24 touchdowns over his freshmen and sophomore years placed him in a tie with Cedric Benson for the second-most in school history, over a two year period. His four-year total of 36 touchdowns, place him in a tie for fifth all-time among Longhorn running backs.

Johnson was named an honorable mention all-Big 12 fullback in 2011, while not having a single carry for negative yards.

According to draft experts, Johnson is the third-best fullback available in the 2012 NFL draft, with some projecting he will be picked somewhere in the fifth or sixth round.
