Bearden had 20 points, while Jones added 12 and Hardee 11. Tyler Clark contributed 10 points in the victory. The win pushed Magnolia’s record to 17-7 on the season and 5-1 in district play. Magnolia West Mustangs Magnolia West’s basketball squad continues to struggle through an up-and-down season, recently dropping two home games to district rivals. The Mustangs hosted Waller Jan. 13 and fell a bit short in a ferocious final period comeback attempt. Magnolia West fell behind early, 17-10, but fought back with a big defensive second period, holding Waller to just six points. The defensive effort helped the Mustangs head into halftime tied at 23-all. Waller exploded in the third period, racing to a 41-34 lead, before Magnolia West was able to find another defensive stand. The Mustangs raced back into the game, but this time the deficit was too much, as Waller held on for a 48-46 victory. Andrew Ellwanger led Magnolia West with 18 points, while Jason Ward added 10. Next up for the Mustangs was a contest against district leader Brenham Jan. 17. The Mustangs were able to hang tough with Brenham, but the Cubs were able to gradually build the lead each period, taking a 50-39 win. Ellwanger led all scorers with 16 points on the night. The losses dropped the Mustangs to 7-13 on the season and 2-4 in district play.
