Magnolia gets back on track; West continues to struggle

The Magnolia Bulldogs got back to their winning ways, after a long winning streak was recently snapped.

The Bulldogs hosted Montgomery Jan. 13, in a fight for first place in their district. Magnolia raced out to a 13-point halftime lead and never looked back, winning 65-47.

Ty Rowden led the four Bulldogs in double figures with 21 points. Josh Bearden added 16, Alex Hardee contributed 13 and Jesse Jones poured in 10 during the game.

The win pushed Magnolia into a three-way tie for first in the district with Montgomery and Brenham.

Magnolia then hosted Northbrook at the Dog House Jan. 17.

Grabbing a 17-10 lead after one period of play, the Bulldogs continued to stretch their lead in the next two periods, grabbing a 58-40 lead. Magnolia let off the gas a bit in the final period, cruising to a 78-63 win.

Four Bulldogs had double figure scoring again, in leading a balanced attack. Bearden had 20 points, while Jones added 12 and Hardee 11. Tyler Clark contributed 10 points in the victory.

The win pushed Magnolia’s record to 17-7 on the season and 5-1 in district play.

Magnolia West Mustangs

Magnolia West’s basketball squad continues to struggle through an up-and-down season, recently dropping two home games to district rivals.

The Mustangs hosted Waller Jan. 13 and fell a bit short in a ferocious final period comeback attempt.

Magnolia West fell behind early, 17-10, but fought back with a big defensive second period, holding Waller to just six points. The defensive effort helped the Mustangs head into halftime tied at 23-all.

Waller exploded in the third period, racing to a 41-34 lead, before Magnolia West was able to find another defensive stand. The Mustangs raced back into the game, but this time the deficit was too much, as Waller held on for a 48-46 victory.

Andrew Ellwanger led Magnolia West with 18 points, while Jason Ward added 10.

Next up for the Mustangs was a contest against district leader Brenham Jan. 17.

The Mustangs were able to hang tough with Brenham, but the Cubs were able to gradually build the lead each period, taking a 50-39 win. Ellwanger led all scorers with 16 points on the night.

The losses dropped the Mustangs to 7-13 on the season and 2-4 in district play.
