| Cougars set sights on district track meet |
|
The 2009 track and field season is coming to a close with the upcoming district meet being hosted by the Cougars set for April 15-17, and the regional qualifier and state meet looming on a not so distant horizon.
The Cougars’ 2009 track season has been for the most part, a successful one. On the men’s side, Tomball has proved to be a juggernaut in the 100 and 200-meter dash. Senior Kyle McKenzie has also emerged as one of the state’s best in the 300-meter hurdles. McKenzie has also helped the Cougars gain a stronghold on the men’s 4x100 and 4x200-meter relay, along with seniors Brendan and Brad Lambert, Jonathan Ermert and Taylor Coleman. High jumpers Tyler Lee and Jordan Leslie have also given Tomball leverage in recent meets. Leslie, along with Brandon Green, and Brad Lambert have been a force in the long jump all season. Green is also a standout for Tomball in the triple jump. Track and field has also been kind to the Lady Cougars this season. Though the Lady Cougars didn’t always finish at the top of every meet, Tomball has outstanding athletes such as sprinters Kenyah McDaniel, Stephanie Patton, and Jenny Smith who consistently place in the top five in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. McDaniel is likely to be an All State selection in the 200-meter and has also proven to be an elite long jumper. The Lady Cougars are also solid in the 4x200-meter relays. Christy McFarling, Utopia Hebert, Caroline Cobb and Jenny Smith are having a great season in the event. Melai Carter and Jessica Collier have been a truly dynamic duo in the high jump. Katelyn Holland is another standout for Tomball in the discus throw. Though the Lady Cougars have plenty of firepower in several events, there will be some stiff competition at the 13-5A district meet this Wednesday. Klein’s Ashley Alexander and Terazha Pitts, Laneadra Curry and Kendra Wren of Klein Oak could all be spoilers in the 100, 200, or 400-meter races. Alexander is a gifted sprinter and the trio from Klein Oak has a knack for finishing close to each other, which could rack up the overall score for the Panthers. Klein Collins’ Amber Goodson and Veronica Serna also pose threats in the 100 and 400-meter races, but the Tigers’ forte is in the relays, where they consistently place in the top tier. Klein Oak and Klein Collins are also strong competitors in the men’s 4x100-meter relays. With such a talented field the atmosphere at Cougar Stadium should be truly electric this Wednesday. Events begin at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
