Wallace’s big day includes accepting offer to Northern Arizona

Wallace As if his season could not get any better, Reid Wallace, the senior post player for the district champion Tomball Cougar basketball team, signed a letter of intent last week to play basketball for and attend Northern Arizona University.

Not only did Wallace ink an offer to play for a Division I college basketball program, he was later named to the Texas High School Coaches Association 2009 All-Star game.

During an April 15 ceremony in the Tomball High School gym, Wallace signed the offer in front of his parents, Kathy Wallace Straiton and Dave Straiton, his teammates and coaches.

Wallace said that he chose Northern Arizona because they offered him an opportunity to play Division I basketball, as well as impressive science and math programs.

“I really wanted to play Division I,” he said. “Plus, it’s beautiful up in Flagstaff and they have what I want to do for my education.”

Cougar head coach Brad Ball said that he could tell Wallace would be a talented player early on in his career.

“Even in the seventh grade, we knew he’d be a special player,” Ball said.

Ball said Wallace’s signing is a reflection of some of the goals of the program.

“I just think this solidifies what we ask these kids to do here,” he added.

In addition to signing a scholarship offer, Wallace will take part in the THSCA All-Star basketball game to be played July 20 at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin. He is one of only four Class 5A players named to the home team, and the only from the Houston area.

Wallace helped lead the Cougars to a 12-2 district record, which earned them the 13-5A district title. He averaged just under 20 points per game and led the team in rebounding and blocked shots.
