Tomball excels at district meet, Magnolia dominates field events

Tomball

Despite a last minute site change to Klein High School, and having to compete in the finals after running preliminaries just the day before on account of bad weather, the Cougars didn’t seem to have missed a beat April 16 at the 13-5A district track and field meet. The Lady Cougars were phenomenal both on the track and in field events as Caitlyn Tate grabbed second place in the 3,200 meters, and third in the 1,600. Kenyah McDaniel placed third in the long jump, while Jenny Smith won first place in the high jump.

The men’s team continued its success in the relays as the quartet of Brenden Lambert, Kyle Mckenzie, Jonathan Ermert and Brandon Green took second place in the 4x100. Green, Lambert, Ermert and Taylor Coleman also placed third in the 4x200 meter relay. Coleman took third as well in the 200-meter dash.

Sprinter Lambert continues to have a great season, finishing second in the 200-meter dash, his fourth top three finish this season in that event. McKenzie has also had a standout season for the Cougars, as he continued to assert his dominance in the 300-meter hurdles with a season best time of 38.51 seconds. McKenzie has six total first place finishes in the 300-meter hurdles this season.

Ryan Tillota was a force in distance running, grabbing second place in the 3,200 and 1,600-meter races. Though Tomball has a stable of elite sprinters, the Cougars also preformed well in field events. By finishing consecutively in second and third place in the high jump, Tyler Lee and Jordan Leslie racked up 18 points towards Tomball’s final score, while Joe Matthews brought home yet another first place finish for Tomball in the discus throw.

The Cougars will be represented by an outstanding 16 athletes in 14 events at the Region II-5A meet, in what seems more like a delegation than the customary handful of athletes most schools will send. The meet will be held on May 1 and 2 in Waco at Baylor University. The Cougars finished second overall at the district meet.

Magnolia, Magnolia West

Magnolia I.S.D.’s high schools had a strong outing at the district meet, putting up solid numbers in several events, including a dominating performance from Rachel Melton, Ana Moreno and Tina Pratt of Magnolia West in the girls’ 3,200-meter race. Melton recorded a first place finish with a time of 11:34.41. Seth Kovanda and Dustin Corkran also posted top five finishes in the 3,200-meter and the long jump for the Mustangs.

The Lady Bulldogs were a juggernaut in field events. Freshman Sarah Bodin won first place in the girls’ pole vault, while sophomore Lindsey Stewart and freshman Shariah Svendson finished in second and fifth. Senior Tara Seim was another first place finisher for Magnolia in the girls’ discus throw. Senior Holly Vonderau finished third in the long jump to help the Lady Bulldogs to a first place finish at the district meet.

On the men’s side, the team of seniors Riley O’Neal, Cody Corolla, and Jacob Hurst were spectacular in the pole vault, notching first, third and sixth place finishes. Dre Milo also finished third in the high jump.
