| Lady Bulldogs, Cougars set sights on softball playoffs |
|
Now that the 2009 high school softball regular season has concluded, two local teams are setting their sights on the playoffs, which kick off this week. The Tomball Lady Cougars and the Magnolia Lady Bulldogs once again find themselves in prime position to make postseason runs, each earning the number two slot in their respective districts. After an 11-2 run in 13-5A, the Lady Cougars finished second behind Klein Oak, the only team to beat Tomball this season. The Lady Panthers finished their 2009 run undefeated, earning the top seed in the playoffs from the district. Tomball will take on either New Caney or Conroe next week in the first round of the Region 3 playoffs. By earning the number two seed in 13-5A, the Lady Cougars were matched up against the third seed from 14-5A. Meanwhile, the Magnolia Lady Bulldogs earned a share of the 18-4A crown after they tied with the Montgomery Bears for the top spot. Each team went 11-1 this season, with their respective losses coming at the hands of the other. According to head coach Rene Bialas, the teams are deemed co-champions, but the Bears won the top seeding for the playoffs after winning a coin flip. By virtue of the coin flip, the Lady Bulldogs are seeded second in 18-4A and will take on San Marcos in the first round of the playoffs. The teams will play a best-of-three series at Bryan High School beginning May 1. Game one is scheduled for May 1 at 7 p.m., with game two set for 6 p.m. on May 2. Should there be a need for a third game, it will take place at 8 p.m. the same day.
