| Waller Bulldog baseball earn first playoff berth in nine years |
|
For only the third time in Waller High School history, with the last being nine years ago, the Bulldog baseball team is headed to the playoffs. After making a great run last year and missing the playoffs by a game, the Bulldogs have used that momentum to get them over the hump. The Bulldogs returned only four varsity lettermen, but they were a talented group, including a pair of First Team All-District players, a Second Team All-District player and an Honorable Mention performer. This group included the number one pitcher and third baseman, a starting centerfielder and leading hitter, a starting shortstop and relief pitcher, and a starting second baseman. Those four also comprised the top four hitters in the lineup. However, the Bulldogs’ ace pitcher and starting center field each suffered season-ending injuries, putting the season in doubt. Rather than rely on experience, the Bulldogs fielded a team of first-year varsity players, including seven who played on the junior varsity team last year, a player from last year’s freshman team, one player who was just in eighth grade last year, and even two who did not play baseball at all in 2008. With a 6-5 district record and just one regular season game remaining, the Bulldogs are assured of one of the four playoff spots in 18-4A. With Brenham and Magnolia both at 11-1 in district and having locked down the top two spots, Waller is battling Montgomery (7-5) for the third spot in the district.
