Stewart was awarded the "T" award by the Sam Houston Lettermen's Association as the outstanding sophomore male student-athlete. The award is presented annually to a sophomore male who excels both academically and athletically.

A two-year letterman as a safety, Steward has totaled 57 tackles for the Bearkats. Last fall he was an Academic All-Southland honorable mention selection with 3.41 grade point average. In 2008, he ranked sixth on squad in tackles with 41 including season best of eight stops at Kansas. His father played football and mother ran track for Sam Houston State. He is a graduate of Magnolia High School.

"Randy typifies what it means to be a Bearkat," SHSU head football coach Todd Whitten said. "He has been a valuable contributor on the field and a leader in the classroom. We're looking forward to seeing what he can accomplish in the next two years."
