| High school sports on hold while UIL waits out swine flu |
|
In the wake of the recent swine flu outbreak, the UIL has taken measures to ensure the safety of all its students and athletes by suspending all events until May 11.
“Taking every possible precaution to prevent the further spreading of this disease is an important contribution to the welfare of our great state, and altering the schedule of our events is a way to keep our participants safe” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. Sports affected by the UIL’s brief hiatus in activity include track and field, baseball, softball, tennis and golf . Locally, the Tomball baseball team’s last home game against Klein Collins on May 1 was cancelled, while Magnolia’s game against the rival Magnolia West Mustangs was also cancelled. The Lady Cougar and Lady Bulldog softball teams will also have their postseason affected, as the UIL has postponed all interschool games until May 11, as well. After advancing to the state tournament, the Lady Bulldog golf team will also have to wait to vie for the title. The tournament will be held beginning May 11 at the previously scheduled times. Track and field has also been shaken up, as all Regional meets have been cancelled, and the state meet has been tentatively rescheduled for May 14-16. The state meet will last three days in order to accommodate the semifinal heats. The semifinal qualifiers will be determined by the district track meet results. Each region will be represented by the top four finishers in each event at the district meets. A list of qualifiers to the state track and field meet will be posted on May 6. All postseason schedules and rescheduling information is tentative, for more information regarding rescheduled events and the new playoff schedule for softball and baseball, visit the UIL website at http://www.uil.utexas.edu.
