American Legion baseball coming to Tomball

American Legion Post 127 is fielding and sponsoring a baseball team from the Tomball area this summer to participate in the American Legion nationwide youth baseball program, Post Commander Jim Poe announced last week.

“This will be the first time Post 127 has sponsored a team to compete in the American Legion national baseball tournament and we are happy to be a part of a program that helps young players to learn the importance of teamwork, discipline, leadership, and good sportsmanship,” he said.

American Legion Baseball competition in 2009 is open to players born on or after Jan. 1, 1990. Players must reside in the Tomball Post’s district (Tomball and surrounding areas). The parents or court appointed guardian’s legal residence that applies to a player’s eligibility must have been established prior to March 31, 2009. Competition is only open to amateurs.

The team will play five district games between June 3 and July 10. Home games will be played at the Tomball High School baseball field and away games will be in the greater Houston area. The Division Tournaments will be played between July 11 and July 23. Should the team advance, State Tournament games with be played between Aug. 6 and Aug. 10, with the winning teams advancing to the World Series between Aug. 14 and Aug. 18, in Fargo, N.D. The American Legion will pay for all the team’s expenses for the state tournaments and World Series games.

American Legion Baseball became a national program in 1925, and the first National Tournament was held in 1926. Since 1925 more than 10 million young people have played American Legion Baseball. On average, 55 percent of Major League players played American Legion Baseball as teenagers; nearly 75 percent of all college players played as teenagers. More than 50 American Legion Baseball graduates have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

This season marks the 83rd Anniversary of competition in the program. Its purpose continues to be in 2009 the same as it was in 1925, “An Investment in America’s Youth.”

Registration will be during the month of May. Any questions about registration, practice games and schedule for the baseball team should be sent to Baseball Chair, American Legion Post 127, P.O. Box 413, Tomball, Texas 77377-0413.
