| Cougars headed to 7-on-7 state tourney |
|
Despite a heartbreaking loss in the finals of the Texan Tournament, the Tomball Cougar 7-on-7 football team will advance to the finals, which are set to be played July 10 and 11 in College Station.
After finishing pool play 2-1 and in first place of Pool C, and knocking off Cy-Creek in the semi-finals, the Cougars faced the Klein Bearkats in the championship game. At the end of regulation, the game was tied at 30-30.
But a defensive penalty was called against the Cougars on the last play. A game cannot end on a defensive penalty. With one more chance at a score, the Bearkats took advantage and kicked a field goal to win 33-30.
Even though Tomball was on the wrong side of the scoreboard, the Cougars are headed to the state tournament for a second consecutive year.
In pool play, Tomball lost its opening game to the Oak Ridge War Eagles, 40-36. They rebounded to win their next two, knocking off Cinco Ranch, 33-26, and Dawson 50-30.
Both the Cougars and Cinco Ranch held 2-1 records at the end of pool play, but Tomball earned first place by way of the total point tie-breaker. The Cougars notched 119 points to the Cinco Ranch’s 109.
Other teams that qualified for state that competed in the Texan Tournament were Langham Creek and tournament champion Klein.
