Experienced offense expected to lead Cougars in 2009 campaign

With the 2009 high school football season just around the corner, the Tomball Cougars are preparing to face stiff competition in a brutal 13-5A.

The Cougars are returning plenty of talent, only this time with more experience. On the offensive side of the ball, the Cougars will have the speed and versatility they lacked in previous seasons, in addition to an improved offensive line led by all-district center Logan Frey.

Tomball’s running game will also be a force to be reckoned with. Tailbacks Garrison Wilson and Brian Angelle both averaged a respectable 4 yards per carry. Wilson is a downhill runner with good acceleration and the ability to break tackles, while Angelle is more of a slasher who has the speed to break to the outside as well as catch out of the backfield.

Derrick Lovick is another back that can make a splash this season. Lovick is a shifty runner with explosive speed. If all else fails the Cougars always have the option to put the ball up for all-state receiver Jordan Leslie, who caught 59 passes en route to a 1,065 yard campaign in 2008.

The defense will be anchored by an experienced, athletic front seven. Shane Privette is a three-year starter at the defensive end position. Privette has an explosive first step and is effective against the run. Linebackers Sam Dyson and Kevin Jackson are solid tacklers and are athletic enough to contain speedy runners.

Tomball will begin two-a-day practices on Aug. 10. Their first game will be Aug. 28 at home against the Katy Morton Ranch Mavericks.
