Mustangs look to build on fast start to 2009-10 season

After coming out of the gates with a 2-0 start last season, Magnolia West was thrown into a competitive district 18-4A in the Mustangs’ first campaign on the varsity level.

Though the offense had its moments, Magnolia West’s Achilles heel was on the defensive side of the ball. The porous Mustang defense was a focal point this off season, as was strength and conditioning.

“They’re going to be bigger, stronger and faster,” head coach David Joiner said. “And nobody’s scoring 40 points on us.”

The Mustangs have already started two-a-day practices and will be returning 11 starters on both sides of the ball, a luxury most teams are rarely afforded, if ever.

“We’re expecting quarterback Josh Logan to have a good year,” Joiner said.

The coaching staff is also looking to junior running back Justin Carrol to have a breakout season if he can stay healthy. Derek Coburn is also a standout for the Mustang offense. The receiver averaged 19 yards per catch last season. Junior running back Dustin Corkran was also productive for Magnolia West last season.

Joiner is looking for that experience and the fruits of off season training to lead the Mustangs to a winning record.

“Right now, we’re focused on working hard and taking it one game at a time,” said Joiner.

However, you can be sure a win against the rival Bulldogs of Magnolia is in the back of the Mustangs’ mind after last year’s 40-14 loss at home the last game of the season. Don’t count the Mustang faithful out of the equation; expect Magnolia West Fans to be out in full force next season.

“Magnolia’s been around for a while. There have been Bulldogs for 100 years, and Mustangs for only three,” Joiner said. “It’s going to take a while, but we have a loyal following of our own that does a good job of supporting us.”

The Mustangs kick off their 2009 season on the road when they travel to take on Galena Park Aug. 28 at 7 p.m.
