Magnolia Bulldogs move to 2-0 with victory over 5A New Caney

After two games into the 2009 high school football season, the Magnolia Bulldogs are proving last year’s incredible playoff run was no fluke.

With a season-opening victory over Galena Park and a Sept.4 35-14 win over class 5A New Caney Eagles, the Bulldogs are proving they are one of the teams to beat in District 18-4A.

The Bulldogs came out firing on all cylinders against the Eagles at Bulldog Stadium, scoring a pair of first quarter touchdowns to go up 14-0 after the first quarter. Running back Chance David scored on a 15-yard run and quarterback Dennis Dunbar followed that up with a 5-yard score of his own in the closing seconds of the first quarter.

Both teams went scoreless in the second quarter, but the Bulldogs added to their lead early in the third frame when Dunbar found the end zone for the second time on the night, this time from 37 yards out to make it 21-0 Magnolia.

New Caney would finally get on the board, but it was only the result of a Bulldog mistake. The Eagles’ Chris Justice recovered a Bulldog fumble and ran it in for a score to cut the Magnolia lead to 21-7.

But the Bulldogs would score a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns, one by AJ Haskey and a rare touchdown pass from Dunbar to David Paden, to blow the game open 35-7.

The Eagles would add a late touchdown to make it 35-14, but it was too little, too late.

As has been the case for the first two games this season, the Bulldogs used a punishing and efficient ground game to wear down their opponent. Magnolia gained 387 total yards, 376 of which came on the ground. The Bulldogs averaged an incredible 7.3 yards per carry on the night.

Head coach Andy Sexton’s offense only attempted three passes, one of which went for the Haskey touchdown. So far this year, the Bulldogs have only attempted seven passes.

Dunbar added to his team-leading total when he carried the ball 13 times for 163 yards. Christian Perez led the Eagles with 125 yards rushing on 16 carries.

After a week off last weekend, the Bulldogs will return to action Sept. 18 when they host Morton Ranch at 7:30 p.m.

Kingwood Park 13, Magnolia West 10

Looking to go to 2-0 for the second consecutive season, the Magnolia West Mustangs took on the Kingwood Park Panthers Sept. 4 in Kingwood.

Leading 10-6 in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter, the Mustangs needed a late defensive stop to secure the victory. But Panthers running back Adam Quintero scored from the 2-yard line and Kyle Trimm’s kick with just over two minutes remaining gave the Panthers the 13-10 victory.

The Mustangs took a late lead when Derek Coburn scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 8:36 left in the fourth. But the Mustang defense couldn’t stop Quintero and the Panthers’ rushing attack, which accounted for 214 yards for the game.

Last weekend the Mustangs took on St. Thomas. Results of that game were unavailable at press time last week.

Next up for Magnolia West is the Sept. 25 district opener at Willis at 7:30 p.m.
