Cougars drop second straight non-district contest with loss to Cy-Creek

After a solid opening week victory over a reeling Morton Ranch team, the Tomball Cougars suddenly find themselves with plenty of question marks as they head into district play.

With the Cougars set to host Spring this Friday in the 13-5A opener, the team will be looking to shore up a defense that saw the Cy-Creek Cougars’ Jermichael Selders run for an astounding 284 yards on 22 carries in Tomball’s 54-28 loss on Sept. 11.

Selders averaged 12.9 yards per carry and scored four touchdowns, one of them on a 63-yard run in the Cy-Creek victory.

For the game, Cy-Creek rushed for 452 total yards. The Tomball Cougars gained 351 yards total for the game.

No. 7-ranked Cy-Creek dominated the game from the outset, scoring the game’s first four touchdowns and taking a 27-0 lead.

It wasn’t until early in the second quarter when Tomball first got on the board with an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Brandon Green. Cy-Creek would keep adding it on, however, scoring the next three touchdowns, two by Selders, to go up 48-7.

Tomball would add three more late scores, including a pair of touchdown runs by Derrick Lovick to cut the lead to 48-28, but Cy-Creek’s Sir-j Pine-earls put the final nail in the Cougars’ coffin when he scored on a 10-yard run to make it 54-28.

With the Cougar offense fielding one of the Houston area’s top wide receivers in Jordan Leslie, the offense is infusing more pass plays than in the past. However, the air game couldn’t quite get going against Cy-Creek, with quarterback Lance Ester going 13-for-27 for 208 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

The Cy-Creek defense stifled Leslie all night, allowing him just two catches for 43 yards.

While facing two playoff teams from a year ago in non-district play certainly is no recipe for easy wins, especially against a top 10 opponent, the Cougars will be looking to keep up with the district’s top playoff contenders starting this week.

With Klein Forest and Westfield among the state’s top teams, the Cougars will have their work cut out for them if they want to compete for a playoff spot in 2009.
