| Magnolia West football off to 2-0 start in 18-4A |
|
In just their second year as a varsity program, the Magnolia West Mustangs are making an early push for a playoff appearance in district 18-4A. The Mustangs, now 2-0 in district play, took care of business against a struggling Caney Creek Panther team Oct. 2 at Magnolia West High School with a 21-7 victory. The Mustang defense limited the Panthers to just 187 total yards of offense as Caney Creek remained winless on the season. After a scoreless first quarter, the Mustang offense finally hit its stride, scoring a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter. The first score came on a 1-yard Dustin Corkran run early in the second, followed by Josh Logan’s own 1-yard score eight minutes later. The 14-0 halftime lead was one the Mustangs would not relinquish. After a scoreless third quarter, the Panthers finally made it interesting when Mickey Lane found the end zone from two yards out to make it 14-7. But the Mustangs squelched any hopes of a Panther rally when Corkran scored his second touchdown of the night, this one on a 21-yard dash with just under six minutes left in the game to make it 21-7. While he never found the end zone, Justin Carroll did much of the work offensively for the Mustangs, carrying the ball 20 times for 176 yards, an average of more than eight yards per carry. Corkran ran for 72 yards on 15 carries as the Magnolia West offense cranked out 276 total yards. With half the season still left to play, Carroll is more than halfway to a 1,000-yard season. So far, the Mustang’s star running back has amassed 585 yards on 81 carries. The Mustangs will now enter a critical stretch on their schedule, with two of the next three teams they will play (Brenham and Montgomery) having a combined 8-2 record at press time last week. If the Mustangs can manage a split among those two contests, they could be in excellent shape to earn a playoff berth with games against a winless Waller team and a 2-3 Huntsville squad.
