Cougars can’t hang with Klein Forest, fall 41-16

After a last-minute Homecoming win Oct. 23 over Dekaney that gave them their first district win of 2009, and just second overall, the Tomball Cougars came crashing back down to earth against Klein Forest Oct. 30.

Despite taking an early lead, the Cougars were routed in their next to last game of the season, 41-16, by one of the Houston area’s top teams.

Early on it appeared as if the Cougars would pick up right where they left off against Dekaney when quarterback Lance Ester connected with Jordan Leslie on a 15-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was no good, and the Cougars took an early 6-0 lead.

But the lead would last for less than two minutes when Klein Forest’s Matt Davis ran for a 15-yard touchdown that put the Golden Eagles up 7-6.

Tommy Kaiser’s Cougar team showed its resiliency early on though, when Dillon Duarte answered the Klein Forest touchdown with a 32-yard field goal that once again put the Cougars in the lead, this time 9-6.

But that was as close as Tomball would get. After a scoreless second half, the Golden Eagles hit the gas pedal, scoring three touchdowns to go up 27-9. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Cougars would answer when Caleb Robinson ran it in from two yards out to make it 27-16.

But with less than eight minutes remaining and down by two scores, the Cougars faced a daunting task. Davis, having already ran for two touchdowns and thrown for another, ran for two more in the fourth quarter, one from 80 yards out and another from 54 to seal the win for the Golden Eagles.

Davis proved to be a one-man wrecking crew for Klein Forest, running 14 times for 244 yards, including touchdown runs of 15, 58, 80 and 54. The Golden Eagle quarterback also went 11-for-19 for 123 yards and one touchdown through the air.

The Cougar offense was stifled most of the night, including running back Derrick Lovick who is striving for a 1,000-yard season.

Lovick netted only 39 yards rushing and needed 157 yards in the season finale against Klein last Friday. Results of that game were unavailable at press time.

Meanwhile, Ester and Leslie, who the week prior accounted for four touchdowns, were mostly silenced by the Klein Forest defense. Ester threw for 72 yards on seven completions and one touchdown while Leslie caught six passes for 68 yards and a score.

The loss dropped the Cougars to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in 13-5A play.
