Mustangs come out on top against Bulldogs in Magnolia Bowl

Even though the fourth and final playoff spot had already been determined with the Waller Bulldogs upsetting the Brenham Cubs, the second annual Magnolia Bowl still held plenty of intrigue for the parents and citizens of Magnolia.

The Magnolia West Mustangs, in only their second year of varsity play, took on their in-city rivals, the Magnolia Bulldogs Nov. 6 at Magnolia High School Stadium.

The Mustangs showed against the Bulldogs that the fledgling program could be one to be reckoned with in the coming years under head coach David Joiner after they pulled out the 17-6 win and closed their season with a 4-6 overall record.

Magnolia West got on the board early when Derek Coburn scored on a two-yard touchdown run with just over 10 minutes left in the first quarter to put the Mustangs up 7-0.

The Mustang and Bulldog offenses struggled to get more going in the first half, with neither team finding the end zone. The first half ended with Magnolia West’s Cameron Wise connecting on a 27-yard field goal to put the Mustangs up 10-0 going into halftime.

The Bulldogs finally got on the board early in the third quarter when Dominic Leabo scampered into the end zone on a 66-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Schuetz. The crucial extra point that would have brought the Bulldogs to within a field goal was no good, and Magnolia trailed 10-6. It was as close as the Bulldogs would get.

Magnolia West’s Josh Logan would find the end zone near the end of the third quarter to put the Mustangs up 17-6, and that’s the way the score would remain after neither team could do much offensively in the fourth quarter.

After the season began on a promising note with the Bulldogs going 4-0 out of the gate, they struggled the rest of the way, particularly in district play, winning just one of their next six games.

For the game, Coburn ran 21 times for a game-high 94 yards and touchdown. Bulldog quarterback Schuetz went 8-for-18 passing with 191 yards through the air and a touchdown pass.

The Mustangs finish the 2009 season 4-6 overall and 3-4 in district, while the Bulldogs went 5-5 overall and 2-5 in district play.

Earning the four playoff spots in 18-4A were district champions Brenham, Huntsville, Montgomery and Waller.
