| Playoff win earns Lady Cougars match up against defending state champs |
|
While the Tomball Lady Cougars took their first step toward a deep playoff run Feb. 16, that one step may have been right into a deep hole.
The Lady Cougars knocked off the Conroe Lady Tigers 56-46 Feb. 16 at Magnolia West High School in the first round of the Region II playoffs. Their reward was a second round matchup against one of the best teams in Texas, and the defending state champions, the Cy-Fair Lady Bobcats.
Tomball took on Cy-Fair Feb. 20 at Cy-Woods High School, but results of that game were unavailable at press time.
But to make it to the second round, the Lady Cougars had to first contend with a Conroe squad that was runner-up in district 14-5A. The Lady Cougars came out on the offensive from the opening tip, pouring in 18 points in the first quarter while holding the Lady Tigers to just 8. With a 10-point lead after the first quarter, the Lady Cougars appeared to be in great shape.
Tomball extended their lead to 13, 33-20, by halftime, tallying 15 second quarter points to Conroe’s 12. It would take a near-miraculous defensive effort by the Lady Tigers to slow down the Tomball offense in the second half, and for at least the third quarter it looked like Conroe may have been up to the task.
The Lady Tigers cut into Tomball’s lead in the third frame, scoring 15 points while holding the Lady Cougars to just 9. Leading 42-35 going into the fourth quarter, the Lady Cougars’ offense got back into gear, netting 14 points while their defense held the Lady Tigers to 11.
Taylor Frank scored 18 points to lead the Lady Cougars.
With the win, Tomball improved to 28-6 overall.
