Cougars escape Panthers with late 3-pointer in Katy Tourney

The Tomball Cougars boys basketball team kept its early season success going in the pool play round of the Katy Classic Tournament Dec. 3.

The Cougars were paired with the Cy Springs Panthers in both teams’ opening game of the tournament. A win by either team would set them up to advance to the gold medal bracket for the tournament championship, while a loss would send them to a silver or bronze medal game.

After the first quarter, the Cougars held a slim 18-13 lead, but the Golden Eagles rallied in the second frame, outscoring Tomball 21-20.

With the score 38-34 at the half, the contest was still anybody’s ball game.

Trailing by four, the Panthers kept the momentum they gained the second quarter going by outscoring Tomball in the third, 16-12. That tied the game at 50 each going into the fourth quarter.

The final quarter saw both teams catch fire offensively, trading buckets and forcing lead changes throughout. But down 68-66 and the clock ticking down its final seconds, Cougar two-way sport star Jordan Leslie drained a three-pointer to put the Cougars up 69-68 with under three seconds to play.

The Panthers were unable to score in the final seconds and the Cougars held on to the victory, improving their record to 5-3 in the early season.

The Cougars later took on Waltrip High School in the opening round, but results of that game were unavailable at press time.

Meanwhile, the Magnolia boys basketball team held a 3-4 overall record going into last weekend’s play. The Bulldogs notched early season wins over Crosby, Conroe and Fort Bend Clements.

The Bulldogs take on Huffman Hargrave Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Magnolia.

The Magnolia West Mustangs sat at 1-3 overall last week, with the team’s lone victory coming over John Cooper on Nov. 23.

The Mustangs will travel to take on Conroe Dec. 8 at 7 p.m.

District play for all local high school basketball teams will not begin until after the New Year.
