The Tomball Lady Cougar basketball squad continued its hot start to the 2009-10 season last week with a 57-40 blowout win over Cy-Woods at Tomball High School.

Both teams have played well during the non-district portion of their schedule, with the Lady Wildcats coming in at 6-3 and Tomball entering the game at 12-3.

The competitiveness between the two teams was evident in the first quarter as the Wildcats and Cougars both netted 12 points. But Tomball took over in the second quarter, outscoring Cy Woods 16-9 to take a 28-21 halftime lead. They never looked back.

The Lady Cougars pulled away even farther in the third quarter, putting up 14 to Cy Woods’ 11 to hold a 42-32 edge going into the fourth. Tomball did not let up, quickly putting to rest any notion of a Wildcat comeback with a 15-8 fourth quarter.

The 17-point win was Tomball’s was sixth straight by double digits.

Tomball shot 42 percent from the field, hitting 20 of the 47 shots they put up. They also won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding the Lady Wildcats, 37-27.

Caitlin Diaz led the Lady Cougars with 22 points, while Taylor Frank added 15 and Kathleen McStravick chipped in 11. All of McStravick’s points came from the charity stripe, where she made 11 of 12 free throws.

Frank has been the team’s leading scorer so far this season, averaging 16.9 points per game.

The Lady Cougars have been one of the hottest teams in the Houston area so far this year. Their 12 wins have come by an astounding average of 15.2 points per game. They have won seven straight.

Tomball took on The Woodlands, another Houston area powerhouse, Dec. 11 at Tomball High School and played at Concordia Lutheran Dec. 12 Results of those games were unavailable at press time.
