Bulldogs, Mustangs impressive in early season

If success in non-district is any indication of how things will go for the Magnolia and Magnolia West boys basketball teams, 2010 could be an exciting year for local high school hoops fans.

Both the Bulldogs and the Mustangs went into the Christmas break with 10 wins apiece and primed for the 18-4A schedule to kick off Jan. 2.

The Magnolia Bulldogs sat at 10-6 after a blowout 74-38 win over Shepherd on Dec. 14, a game in which the Bulldogs led 21-7 after the first quarter. The win was Magnolia’s seventh straight after starting the season just 3-6.

After falling 64-43 to Dripping Springs on Dec. 4, the Bulldogs righted the ship and went on a tear, beating Splendora, SA St. Anthony, Atascocita, New Waverly, Willis and Shepherd.

After a Dec. 29 test against 5A giant Katy, the Bulldogs will kick off district play on Jan. 2 against Montgomery.

The senior-laden team is led by Jarard Hood and Jesse Jones. Both players are averaging just over 14 points per game. Craig Bopp (11.7 ppg) and Josh Twardowski (10.7 ppg) are also major contributors to the Bulldogs’ success.

Meanwhile, the Mustangs are in the midst of an impressive streak of their own, having notched five straight wins.

Magnolia West last played Dec. 19 when they survived a scare from SA Cole in a 39-37 victory. Leading by seven going into the fourth quarter, Cole rallied for 10 points. But the Mustangs’ five in the final frame was just enough to secure the win.

After a rocky start that saw the Mustangs go 1-3 in their first four games, they have gone on to win nine of their next 11.

One more non-district contest remains, Dec. 30 against Cy-Fair, before the Mustangs begin district play on Jan. 2 against Brenham.
