| Tomball boys, girls hoops welcome start of district play |
|
With the onset of the New Year, local high school basketball teams are kicking off district play and Tomball Cougars boys and girls hoops teams are hoping to parlay a successful non-district season into a district title. Through four games for the Lady Cougars in district, it’s so far, so good. Tomball has won it’s first four district contests and jumped out to an early lead in 13-5A. With wins over Spring, Klein Collins, Klein and Westfield, the Lady Cougars are in prime position to qualify for one of the district’s four playoff spots. In their latest district contest, the Lady Cougars earned their most impressive victory of the season over Westfield. Trailing by six on the road against the Lady Mustangs, Tomball rallied for 16 fourth-quarter points while holding Westfield to just eight on their way to a 48-44 come-from-behind victory. Caitlin Diaz led the Lady Cougars with 17 points, while Taylor Frank chipped in 10. Frank (15.7 ppg) and Diaz (13.8 ppg) have been Tomball’s leading scorers in the 2009-10 season. The Lady Cougars have an overall record of 18-4. They next play Jan. 12 when they host Klein Forest at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, the boys team got a later start to the district season, having gone 1-1 so far in 13-5A play. After losing 62-58 Jan. 2 to Klein, the Cougars rallied to beat Westfield 57-55 Jan. 5 at Tomball High School. Leading by just one going into the fourth quarter, the Cougars held off a Mustang rally, outscoring Westfield 15-14 in the fourth to escape with the two-point win. Two-sport star Jordan Leslie led the team as he has most of the season with 24 points. Leslie is averaging 18.8 points for the season.
