Lady Cougars battling for district hoops title

With two games remaining and a postseason berth already locked up, the Tomball Lady Cougar basketball team is now setting its sights on a district championship. If all goes according to plan, the Lady Cougars could face a 9-1 Dekaney team in the season finale in what could be a chance for Tomball to win at least a share of the district title.

DeKaney won the first matchup between the two, 78-75 on Jan. 15. If the Lady Cougars win their final three games against Westfield, Klein Forest and Dekaney, the will finish the 2010 district season 11-2. Tomball would need Dekaney to lose two of their final three games in order to claim an outright district title. The biggest challenge on their way to a possible district-deciding game against Dekaney was the Lady Cougars' Jan. 29 contest against a 7-3 Westfield team. Results of that game were unavailable at press time.

Meanwhile, with only a week and just three games remaining on the schedule, the Tomball Cougar boy's basketball team will likely find themselves missing out on the playoffs this year.

At 3-5 in district, the Cougars at press time last week were tied with Dekaney and one full game behind Klein Forest and Klein Oak, both at 4-4, for the fourth and final playoff spot in 13-5A. As of press time last week, the Cougars were still mathematically in contention for a playoff spot, still having games left with Klein Oak, Klein Forest and Dekaney, the three teams ahead of them in the playoff race. Should the Cougars go undefeated the rest of the way and the two Klein schools falter, the Cougars could sneak in as the fourth seed from 13-5A.

After being in contention throughout most of the year for a postseason berth, the Cougars hit the skids, losing three straight to Spring, Klein Collins and Klein. Perhaps the most damaging defeat came at the hands of the Klein Collins Tigers at Tomball High School on Jan. 22, a team that has only won two district game.

One of the bright spots for the Tomball hoops team this year has been the play of two-sport star Jordan Leslie. Leslie, who has earned All-State honors for his play on the football field, leads the team in scoring, averaging 19 points per game. He also leads the team in rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.
